Show Notes

I am delighted to welcome Dr. Taraneh Matloob to the podcast! Taraneh is Associate Professor of Literacy Education in the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa. Taraneh teaches Multicultural Children’s Literature courses,  a doctoral theory course, and a course called, “Ideological Aspects of Children’s Literature” for Masters students. She is also a published children’s book author. Taraneh has published five picture books and is currently working on middle-grade novels.

In this episode, Taraneh describes how we can engage our students as intellectual partners, instead of viewing them as recipients of information. She provides specific strategies for supporting student engagement in class discussions and activities, including ways to help students feel more comfortable and confident talking about controversial issues related to diversity and inclusion. Taraneh models how we can honor our students’ voices and shares that, “everyone has their own story and their own perspective and as learners we listen to stories, but we don’t tell our stories, so I try to give them little opportunities...to have them share their story.”
